يروي الكتاب حكايات ترقى إلى نهاية القرن التاسع عشر وبدايات العشرين، عن نشاطات الإرسالية الأميركية ورحلاتها في منطقة الخليج إضافة إلى العراق واليمن، والتي كانت تجمع بين العمل التبشيري والطبي والثقافي والتعليمي والإنساني. ويتضمن صورا فوتوغرافية جميلة ونادرة عن الخليج والجزيرة العربية تنشر للمرة الأولى، كما يعرض خفايا كثيرة وقضايا مجهولة عن تاريخ المنطقة وحوادثها منذ 1892 حتى منتصف العشرينيات من هذا القرن. يستأنف الكاتب البحريني خالد البسام في هذا الكتاب النشاط الذي كان قد بدأه عبر نشر مجموعة من الكتب حول تاريخ المنطقة بأسلوب وطريقة كتابة جديدين.
