يتحدث هذا الكتاب للدكتورة (نعمات أحمد فؤاد) عن تأريخ لعصر من الفن، بداية من نشأة الفنون في منتصف التسعينيات مع المسرح وصولا إلى سبعينيات القرن العشرين ووفاة أم كلثوم، وقد بدأ الكتاب بخطاب أرسلته نعمات إلى أم كلثوم، ثم تبدأ الكاتبة في الحديث عن الفن في نهايات القرن التاسع عشر بداية من ظهور المسرح في منتصف القرن، مرورا بتطوره والأسماء التي ظهرت في هذه الفترة وأنواع المسرح من كوميدي وغنائي وغيره، وبعض وطرائف المسرح، حتى والوصول إلى بدايات القرن العشرين وظهور الفرق المتعددة، ثم تحدثت باختصار عن نشأة السينما، وعن مقاهي القاهرة، كل مقهى ورواده من المشاهير .. ومثلما تناولت نشأة المسرح وتطوره تحدثت هكذا عن الموسيقى والغناء، وبعدها يتحول الحديث بشكل كامل عن أم كلثوم وقريتها ونشأتها وطفولتها، مع الكثير من الأحداث التي ترويها أم كلثوم بنفسها.
