تناول الكتاب حيث اتسم تاريخ كوكبنا بثلاثة أحداث حاسمة وهي ظهور جزيئات مزودة بقدرة على التناسخ منذ ما يربو على 3,5 مليار سنة، ثم إنجاز كائنات مزودة بسلسلة مزدوجة من المعلومات الوراثية منذ ما يزيد على مليار سنة وأخيرا ظهور نوع قادر على تملك الكون وعلى تملك نفسه منذ عدة مئات الآلاف من السنوات. ابتداع الإنسان الحدث الأول الذي سمح للبنى الكيماوية المتشكلة أن تقاوم التأذي الحاصل مع الزمن فهي من خلال صنع نسخ عديدة منها تكون بشكل كامن غير فانية لقد تم تحييد الزمن المدمر.
