بحث المؤلفون في تاريخ القبائل العربية وقد قادهم هذا إلى ذكر تاريخهم القديم، دون التعرض إلى حالتهم الحاضرة في أيامهم. فجاءت أبحاثهم ناقصة مبتورة ومقصورة على عهد معين، يعود في أغلبه إلى عهود ما قبل الإسلام. لذا يأتي هذا الكتاب الذي يقع في أربعة أجزاء ليعالج هذه النواقص ويلبي حاجة لدى المهتمين والباحثين المتخصصين في الأنساب. وقد راعى المؤلف الأخذ عن القبائل مباشرة، متجنبا الاعتماد حسب الإمكان على كتب الأجانب وجل قصده الوصول إلى البيان الصحيح وتعيين وجه الاستفادة من آثار السابقين.
