في روايته «ببغاء فلوبير» التي تتناول قصة طبيب أرمل متقاعد (جيفري بريثويت) ومن خلال تداعيات الرواية يضطر للذهاب إلى مدينة رودن الفرنسية، منتقلا إلى أكثر من مكان بحثا عن نتف تتعلق بصاحب الرواية الأشهر «مدام بوفاري»، التي صدرت في العام 1857 وتمتاز بواقعيتها وروعة أسلوبها، وتعد أول رواية واقعية، إنه جوستاف فلوبير. من بين خيوط الرواية أن جيفري يقرأ في إحدى الصحف خبرا عن متحف يعرض ببغاء محنطا كان الروائي فلوبير اعتاد أن يضعه على مكتبه وهو في مراحل كتابة قصته «قلب طاهر»، والذي كان من ضمن شخصيات القصة.
