إن هذا الكتاب يبحث في حياة شخصية لامعة من شحصیات العراق، في أواخر الدولة العباسية، هي شخصية أبي الفضائل شرف الدولة إقبال الشرابd، الذي كان له أثر فعال في تسيير شؤون الخلافة العباسية في عهد الخليفتين العباسيين الأخيرين : المستنصر بالله وابنه المستعصم بالله، لقد كان إقبال الشرابي مقدم الجيوش العباسية على عهدهما، وقد دافع التتر وحاربهم خلال ربع قرن من الزمن، ولم يتجرأ المغول على احتلال بغداد وتدميرها إلا بعد وفاته بنحو ثلاث سنوات.
