يعتبر هذا الكتاب وثيقة تبين لنا صورة لمصر وشرق البحر المتوسط في القرن الحادي عشر من قبل مولد المسيح، تحدثنا كيف كان ما بينها من العلاقات السياسية والتجارية جميعا، وتسرد لنا بعض ما ازدهر في مصر يومئذ من أنواع الصناعات والمحاصيل، وما كانت تصدره من البضائع والعروض. كانت تصدر ما تصنعه، من الذهب والفضة وأثواب الدكتان والسمك المجفف المحفوظ، وذلك فضلا عن الجلود وورق البردي الذي كثر تصديره إلى بلبوص (جبيل) ومنها إلى سائر أنحاء العالم القديم. يستعرض الكتاب في طياته المحتويات التالية : 1) قصة هذا الأدب، 2) صور من كلامهم، الدولة القديمة، 3) العصر الذهبي للأدب، 4) عصر الانتقال الثاني ومطالع الدولة الحديثة، وغيرها من موضوعات الكتاب.
