ينقسم الكتاب إلى أربعة دراسات، وتتناول الدراسة الأولى لماري لور رايان، المنهج المعرفي في السرديات، الذي يولي اهتماما بالغا بما يكشفه السرد من حياة العقل حيث يسود هذا النهج الموجة المستقبلية للدراسات السردية وتتناول الدراسة الثانية لأندريه بيل، تبعات المفهوم الباختيني للحوارية حول السرديات، حيث تتبع الباحث مفهوم الحوارية في كتابات باختين ما بين عامي 1935 و1971 ويعد البحث الثالث دراسة تاريخية في أصول المصطلحات التي يستخدمها الناقد والمنظر الفرنسي المعروف جيرار جينيت حيث تتناول الباحثة فرانشيسكا سكوتا، التراث الكلاسيكي في النظريات السردية لرائد السرديات الحديثة ويعرض البحث الرابع الذي كتبه روبرتو تالامو، فلسفة بول ريكور في السرد وفي كتابة التاريخ وفي تمثيل الحياة الداخلية للشخصيات.
