رغم أن أصطيفان أكصيل يعد من كبار مؤرخي المدرسة الكولونيالية الفرنسية الذي رفع شعار \" كل ما ليس روماني فهو فينيقي\" ورغم كل الانتقادات التي وجها له الكثير من المهتمين بالتاريخ الشمال أفريقي من المؤرخين المغاربة بسبب تحيزه الواضح الى الأطروحة الفرنسية الاستعمارية التي الرومان والفينيقيين على حساب تهميش والتقليل من دور الشمال أفريقيين في بناء تاريخهم والمساهمة في تاريخ البشرية إلا أن كتبه تعد من المصادر الأساسية التي لا يستغنى عنها لوفرة المادة العلمية فيها، بسبب الاحتكار الفرنسي للتاريخ الجزائري والشمال أفريقي وتحريرها وكذلك إمتلاكها للمادة العلمية الأولى التي قدمت لها القراءة التي تناسب الأطروحة الاستعمارية على مستعمراتها.
