يتمثل الهدف الأساسي لهذا الكتاب في رصد وتوثيق الحرف الشعبية المصرية، وإعداد قاعدة معلومات متخصصة في هذا المجال، وذلك من أجل الحفاظ على هذا المأثور الشعبي المهم. وقد شرع مركز توثيق التراث الحضاري والطبيعي في إعداد خطة شاملة لمسح هذه الحرف على مستوى الجمهورية، ويمثل هذا الجزء الذي بين بين أيدينا القسم الأول من تنفيذ هذه الخطة، حيث اخترنا مدينة القاهرة كبداية لعمليات الرصد والتوثيق. وقد إشتمل هذا القسم على عشر حرف هي : النحاس، الخيامية، الشموع، فانوس رمضان، تشكيل الرخام، النجارة البلدي، عروسة المولد، الفخار، تجليد الكتب، التطعيم بالصدف.
