إن منطقة حضارة البحر المتوسط التي يشير إليها هذا الكتاب لا تحدها حدود التقاء مياه البحر بالأرض المحيطة بها هذه هي الحدود الجغرافية أما الحدود الثفافية فإنها تتجاوز في جنوب البحر بلاد المغرب لتشمل موريتانيا والسودان وتتجاوز في شرق البحر، بلاد الشام لتشمل الجزيرة العربية والعراق. وعندما يقرر هذا الكتاب أن حضارة مصر ليست جزءا من حضارة الشرق فإن المقصود بوضوح هو الشرق الأقصى أي بلاد اليابان والصين وليس المقصود بلاد الشرق الأدنى التي هي جزء من منظقة حضارة البحر المتوسط.
