يمد هذا الكتاب المعماريين والنقاد بأدوات وأفكار من شأنها توسيع أفق الحوار المعماري ومعناه، إذ إنه يتيح رؤية الماضي بمنظار جديد، من خلال أسلوب تحليله لعمارة الحاضر، وتحليله أيضا لعمارة الماضي مقارنة بالحاضر. ويتضمن الكتاب دروسا بليغة في استلهام التراث المعماري وتوظيفه بشكل فعال في العمارة المعاصرة. ويتوقف مؤلفه عند مسألة نقد العمارة نفسها، إذ يقارن العمارة بالشعر، ويشير إلى إمكانية الاستفادة من أساليب نقد الأدب في نقد العمارة، بما في ذلك النقد الذاتي الذي يعد ذا أهمية قصوى في عملية إيجاد الإبداع. وعلي الرغم من مرور ما يزيد على خمسة عقود على صدور هذا الكتاب، إلا أن طروحات فنتوري ماتزال قائمة ومؤثرة على امتداد عصر ما بعد الحداثة الذي نعيشه اليوم.
