يتضمن هذا الكتاب لمؤلفه المفكر الإسلامي الكبير أحمد أمين سير لعشر من أعلام المصلحين في العصر الحديث، انتقاهم المؤلف من مختلف الأقطار العربية والإسلامية، فكان منهم : جمال الدين الأفغاني من بلاد الأفغان، ومحمد عبده، وعلي مبارك من مصر، والسيد أمير علي والسيد أحمد خان من الهند.. وغيرهم كانوا من الحجاز والشام وأقطار أخرى، وقد نشر أمين هذا الكتاب إيقاظا للضمائر، وشحذا للهمم، واستنهاضا للأمم، وابتعاثا للأمل في القلوب بعد أن أظلمها اليأس والقنوط من المستقبل، لذلك رأى أمين أن يكتب هذا العمل عل الشباب بعد قراءته لسير هؤلاء المصلحين أن يحذوا حذوهم، ويسيروا على درب خطاهم، فتكون بداية نهضة وعزة لأوطان استضعفت فاستباح أهلها الكسل واعتادوا التأخر.
