في هذا الكتاب لقد أجاد البحتري القول في أكثر فنون الشعر، وقصر في الهجاء غير أن أروع شعره كان في فن الوصف ويظهر في شعره سهولة المعنى ووضوح التركيب وقرب الخيال وتحليقه وتآلف الألفاظ، وقد هجا عددا من الكتاب والوزراء وأصحاب الدواوين. وهذا ديوان في مجمل شعر البحتري، وهو كتاب ضم كافة القصائد التي دونها البحتري التي ناهز عددها الألف وهي موزعة على خمسة عشر ألف بيت وبضع مئات من أبيات الشعر.
