يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى تقصى تاريخ الحركة الوطنية التي نشطت في السودان بين سنة 1900 و1969م، وبالتالي تحديد الجذور التاريخية للسودان الحديث، وللثورات التي قامت به والتي أدت إلى استقلاله عند الطامعين بأرضه. ومن أبرز المحطات التاريخية الثورية التي تم التوقف عندها في الكتاب نذكر : ثورة 1924 الوطنية الجديدة المهدية الجديدة، الحركة الوطنية والتطورات الدستورية 1942-1956م، الأحزاب والنقابات واتحاد الطلاب 1946-1956.
