يعد معجم المخصص من أضخم المعاجم العربية وأثراها من حيث الكم فهو غني بالمفردات، فالمخصص عبارة عن معجم يصنف الألفاظ والكلمات حسب معانيها، لدينا أن ابن سيدة قد ألف المخصص بعد تأليف المحكم والمحيط العظيم الذي التزم فيه منهج الخليل في تصنيف الألفاظ وترتيبها وقد قسم ابن سيدة معجمه المخصص إلى كتب والكتب إلى أبواب، إلا أنه لم يقسم الأبواب إلى فصول مثل من سبقه، لأنه قد يستغني عنه، فالتسلسل المنطقي أساس تصنيف ألفاظ المخصص، ورتب معجمه على ترتيب خاص وذكي، حيث ينتقل بين موضوعاته بشكل منطقي ومتسلسل، فمن كتاب خلق الإنسان إلى الحيوان ثم إلى النبات، ثم إلى الوسط المحيط بالنبات وهو الطبيعة بكل ما تشتمل عليه من جبال ورواسي وأنهار، وسماء وأفلاك ونجوم وأقمار... إلخ.
