يروي هذا الكتاب الذي كتبه العالمان جاك بیکارد وروبرت سه ديتز القصة الكاملة لمنطاد الماء «تربیست» منذ أول غوصة له في سنة 1948 باسم ف نرس 2 «2-FNRS»، عند ميناء «داکار» إلى التجربة التي أجريت على عمق سبعة أميال في مياه المحيط عند جزيرة جوام في سنة 1960، وتشمل القصة كذلك غوصات المنطاد في مياه إيطاليا (1953-1909) وغوصاته في البحر الأبيض المتوسط التي أشرف عليها مكتب بحوث البحرية في سنة 1907 والتي انتهت بشراء الأسطول الأميركي للمنطاد المائي «تریست» ثم الغوصات التالية عند میاه «ساندینو» ثم الغوصات العميقة المدى «للمشروع نکتون».
