ليس هذا الكتاب كتاب مذكرات بالمعنى المعروف للمذكرات، ولا كتابا يبوح بالأسرار، إنه في منزلة بين المنزلتين : هو مذكرات بمعنى : أنه سرد لأحداث وقعت، فحفظتها ذاكرتي، ولقفتها دفاتري الصغيرة، ووعدت نفسي بالعودة إليها، وهو أسرار بمعنى : أنه يتحدث عن وقائع وأعمال كانت، في وقت من الأوقات، أسرار لا تقبل البوح، وفي الكتاب أخبار، ومحطات، ولقاءات، وذكريات مشوقة، تمحورت كلها حول زعماء سياسيين كلفوني إعداد مذكراتهم الشخصية، أو كتابتها، أو مراجعتها، فانطلقت من ذلك لأسرد قصصا ومحطات وأخبار بعضها مجهول، وبعضها معلوم، كنت فيها طرفا مقبولا في حياة الزعماء الثلاثة الذين تناولهم هذا الكتاب : الرئيس إلياس سركيس، الرئيس صائب سلام، العميد ريمون إده.
