الكتاب يتناول تاريخ الدولة العباسية من جانبها السياسي، وقد استطاع المؤلف أن يوجز فيه أحداث ذلك التاريخ المعقدة والمتشابكة، نتيجة الكيانات السياسية المتعددة التي تكونت ضمن دولة مترامية الأطراف، استمرت أكثر من ستة قرون، حتى سقطت على أيدي المغول سنة 1258 م، ويتبين، من خلال البحث، أن انتقال الحكم من الأموين إلى العباسيين يعد منعطفاً مهما في التاريخ الإسلامي غير، بكشل جذري، الحياه الاجتماعية والسياسية والثقافية والاقتصادية للمجتمع العربي المسلم، وفتح الباب للمسلمين غير العرب للبروز في مختلف هذه النواحي وعلى جميع الصعدان.
