هذا الكتاب سياحة في رحاب الشعر الجاهلي وعالمه الواسع، ودراسة للملابس من خلال الشعر، والشعر وثيقة تاريخية وأدبية وحضارية ولغوية، وليس القصد من هذا الكتاب إعطاء فكرة عن كل قطعة من الملابس وحسب، وإنما القصد الأساس هو كيف تناول الشعر-حين تتوافر شواهده-وصف الملابس ولذلك فإن في استقصاء أكبر قدر من الشواهد يعطينا أكبر قدر من التناول، وقد يكون التناول في كثير من الأحوال مجازية ينتقل من الاستعمال المادي إلى الدلالة المعنوية، فالثوب قد يعني الزوجة أو البيت أو الطير أو السلاح أو الشرف وهكذا ولذلك فلا بد من استقصاء الشواهد لتكون الدلالة واضحة، ويكون التمثيل دقيقا صائبا. ويقسم الكتاب على الشكل التالي : المنسوجات العربية في الشعر الجاهلي، المواد الخام، أنواع المنسوجات، الملابس الجاهلية : معجم هجائي بأنواع الملابس وصفاتها.
