مؤلف هذا الكتاب يؤمن إيمانا عميقا-قد لا يشاركه فيه الكثير من المتخصصين-أن علم النفس هو أساسا علم لفهم الحياة الإنسانية بجوانبها المختلفة. ويؤمن أيضا بإمكانيات هذا العلم اللا محدودة من حيث إثراء معرفتنا المباشرة بالشروط التي تحكم السلوك الإنساني وبالتالي بإمكانية توجيه معرفتنا هذه لما فيه نفع للفرد أو للجماعات الإنسانية المختلفة. ويؤمن الكاتب أيضا أن دراسة علم النفس لا يجب أن تكون \"كهنوتا\" عمليا تقتصر على فئة من المتخصصين الذين يتخذون من قواعد المنهج العلمي غطاء صارم يحرم علم النفس من ممارسة دوره الحيوي الذي نشأ من أجله، وهو فهم الإنسان وتطويع هذا الفهم باستخدام لغة يسهل على الآخرين استيعابها واستثمارها.
