هذا البحث المستفيض الذي يقدمه لنا العالم الجليل الدكتور عبد السلام الترمانيني عن الرق، ماضية وحاضره، ليس تاريخيا وصفيا خالصا، ولا هو دراسة قانوينة خالصة وإنما هو مزيج متكامل من التاريخ والوصف والتأمل والتحليل، جمع مادته كما يقول في مقدمته من كتب الأدب والتاريخ والأخبار، ومن تقارير لجنة حقوق الإنسان واللجان الخاصة المتفرعة منها، ومن تقارير مكافحة الرق والبوليس الدولي أو من مشاهداته الدراسية لأحوال الرق الحديث، ومع ذلك فقد طبعا تاريخ البشرية ولازماه شران لا يختلف العقلاء على موضع الشر فيهما، الحرب واستعباد الإنسان للإنسان ومع ذلك تبقى الحروب ويستمر استغلال الإنسان للإنسان كما لو كان ذلك سنة جارية أو قدرا إلهيا مقدورا.
