هذا الكتاب يعد بحق من الكتب التراثية النفيسة، ومعجمة بأسماء خيل العرب وأنسابها وفرسانها في الجاهلية والإسلام، مقرونة بما يتصل بكثير منها من أخبار، وما شهدته من معارك وما قيل فيها من أشعار. إذ جمع في كتابه جميع الخيول العربية الأصيلة، معتمدا على أمهات الكتب التي سبقته في هذا المجال، حتى حتى بلغ ما ضمه هذا الكتاب من الخيل العربية المنسوبة، قد وصل عددخا إلى (837) فرس. وبهذا يمكن أن نعد هذا الكتاب مرجعا في أسماء الخيل وفرسانها عند العرب.
