عندما أعدت د. وفاء رسالتها للماجستير \"قصص الأطفال في الأدب السعودي\" وجدت صعوبة كبيرة في الرجوع إلى المراجع العربية في مجال أدب الأطفال، فقد كان هناك اختلاف كبير يصل أحيانا إلى حد التناقض بين تلك المراجع في المفاهيم الأساسية لقصة الطفل وأنواعها وخصائصها وعناصرها، لقد كانت المصطلحات عائمة وغير محددة، ومتناقضة في بعض الأحيان، وهناك خلط كبير بينها، وفي رسالتها سعت لبناء أساس نظري لقصة الطفل : أنواعها، ومصادرها، وأشكالها، وعناصرها، وعلاقتها بمراحل الطفولة، لقد اعتمدت في هذا الكتاب على مراجع أدب الأطفال باللغة الانجليزية، لانها أكثر دقة ووضوحا، كما أضيفت ملاحق ذات فائدة كبيرة للأديب الذي يكتب للأطفال.
