هذا الكتاب يسهم في تفكيك أسطورة اليوتوبيا ما قبل العام 1948، ويزعزع مكانة \"الخط الأخضر\" الفاصل في خطاب اليسار الإسرائيلي بين زمنين مفتعلين، وفي هذا السياق يسعى شنهاف إلى استكشاف آفاق جديدة لتسوية الصراع في فلسطين وعليها انطلاقا مما حدث في العام 1948، أسطورة \"الخط الأخضر\" ليست نتاج ذاكرة مشوشة، بل صياغة أيديولوجية تعوزها البراءة لواقع يراد لها أن تسهم في طمس ملامحه، وعلى الرغم من حقيقة أن الكتاب موجه في الأساس إلى جمهور إسرائيلي، ويشكل جزءا من سجالات الحقل الثقافي الإسرائيلي بشأن هوية الدولة والمجتمع، إلا أن تشابك واشتباك الوجود الديمغرافي والاقتصادي والاجتماعي للفلسطينيين والإسرائيليين يجعل من الفلسطينيين طرفا رئيسا في هذه السجالات، ومن هنا يكتسب الكتاب أهمية خاصة بالنسبة للقارئ الفلسطيني والعربي بشكل عام.
