جمع ياقوت الحموي أسماء البلدان والمواضع من جبال ووديان بحسب ترتيبها على حروف الهجاء، محددا موقع كل بلد بالمناسب كأن يذكر بعدها عن بلد أشهر منها، ويتكلم على اشتقاق الكلمة، ثم يذكر الأعلام المشهورين منها والمنسوبين إليها مقدما أهل الحديث ثم الشعراء والأدباء وغيرهم مترجما لبعضهم، ذاكرا بعض الأشعار وقد استفاد ياقوت من الكتب التي سبقته بأمانة حيث يذكر مراجعه، كما اعتمد على معلوماته ورحلاته . كما يلاحظ القارىء بعض الملامح السياسية والإجتماعية وقد ذكر 12952 مادة (بلدا) . وألحق بالكتاب مجلدان للفهارس العلمية.
