كتاب الحيوان -وهو من مؤلفات الجاحظ الأخيرة أيضا- أول كتاب وضع في العربية جامع في علم الحيوان.. لأن من كتبوا قبل الجاحظ في هذا المجال أمثال الأصمعي وأبي عبيدة وابن الكلبي وابن الأعرابي والسجستاني وغيرهم.. كانوا يتناولون حيوانا واحدا مثل الإبل أو النحل أو الطير.. وكان اهتمامهم الأول والأخير بالناحية اللغوية وليس العلمية.. ولكن الجاحظ اهتم إلى جانب اللغة والشعر بالبحث في طب كتاب الحيوان -وهو من مؤلفات الجاحظ الأخيرة أيضا- أول كتاب وضع في العربية جامع في علم الحيوان.. لأن من كتبوا قبل الجاحظ في هذا المجال أمثال الأصمعي وأبي عبيدة وابن الكلبي وابن الأعرابي والسجستاني وغيرهم.. كانوا يتناولون حيوانا واحدا مثل الإبل أو النحل أو الطير.. وكان اهتمامهم الأول والأخير بالناحية اللغوية وليس العلمية.. ولكن الجاحظ اهتم إلى جانب اللغة والشعر بالبحث في طبائع الحيوان وغرائزه وأحواله وعاداته.
