فقد اعتنى العلماء الذين ألفوا في السيرة النبوية والشمائل المحمدية بعدة جوانب من خصائص النبي التي تسمو بمنزلته وتعلو برتبته عن غيره من الأنبياء والرسل، ومن أجل مظاهر هذا الاعتناء حصرهم لأسماء النبي ولمهم لشعثها ونظمهم لها في توالفي مفردة وكذلك سعيهم للكشف عن معانيها وما تضمنته من دلالات توجب الفضل والشرف لصاحبها عليه الصلاة والسلام إذ كثرة الأسماء تدل على شرف المسمى كما هو مقرر ويبين الحافظ القاضي عياض أهمية هذا الجانب من خصائص النبي قائلا : فمن خصائصه تعالى له : إن ضمن أسماءه ثناء وطوى أثناء ذكره عظيم شكره، ومن أفضل ما ألف في الأسماء النبوية وجمعها وترتيبها والكشف عن معانيها ومكنوناتها الحافظ أبو الخطاب ابن دحية السبتي المتوفى سنة 633 هـ. فكان الاعتناء بتلخيص لمختصر له يتحلى بأهمية وقيمة كبيرة فجاء هذا الكتاب تبيانا للأصل وتقريبا له.
