تناول الكتاب أمران يثيران الفضول : أولهما أن كاتبه لم يكن شيوعيا ولا ماركسيا، إن لم يكن في طرف آخر لم يعرف بتعاطفه معهما، ذلك أن جاك أتالي كان قريبا من \"الأحزاب الاشتراكية الأوروبية\" التي اشتهرت بعدائها لـ \"المعسكر الاشتراكي\" السابق، وثاني الأمرين : أن الكتاب ظهر بعد السقوط التاريخي للماركسية وأحزابها. وعلى الرغم من هذه المفارقة فإن \"أتالي\" أنجز كتابا عن الماركسية في وجوهها المختلفة، رصد فيه مسار ماركس وتكون أفكاره، وانتقال هذه الأفكار من حيز النظرية إلى حيز التطبيقة. ينطوي هذا الكتاب على غايات ثلاث واضحة : إعادة قراءة الماركسية اليوم، يعيدا عن \"التحزب الأيديولوجي\" السابق، الذي كان يساوي بين النظرية الماركسية وتطبيقاتها المستبدة الهجينة، وبين كتاب \"رأس المال\" والمعتقلات الستالينية.
