يتناول الكتاب سيرة علي بن مبارك بن سليمان وأنه عاش علي مبارك حياة \"هي بنت زمانه ومكانه\" تحكمها نظم بدت حتمية أو كانت حتمية في وقتها، توارث فيها ارادة الفرد أمام ارادة الحاكم، وأختفت فيها القيم المعنوية للمجتمع وانزوت الإرادة المادية للأفراد، وغدت إرادة الحاكم هي وحدها التي تنعكس علي المجتمع شرا أو خيرا، وبها ينبه الأفراد أو يخملون، وفي هذا تتمثل قدرة البطل في التاريخ حيث يتكيف مع ظروف عصره وبيئته حتي يستطيع التعبير عن إرادته فيحملها عصره، وكان علي مبارك من هذا الطراز من الرجال الممتازين في عصره، وكان من الطبيعي أن يتكيف هذا الامتياز مع أرادة الحاكم وإلا حجب الحاكم امتيازه وقدرته إذا ما أهمله وأبعده عن العمل.
