استعرض المؤلف نشأة قراءة أهل المدينة وخصائصها وتطورها ابتداء من أبي بن كعب الذي ورد في الحديث أنه أقرأ الصحابة، وقد أخذ عنه عبد الله بن عياش الذي تخرج عليه مجموعة من شيوخ قراء المدينة منهم أبو جعفر يزيد بن القعقاع المدني وشيبة بن نصاح ويزيد بن رومان ومسلم بن جندب وغير هؤلاء. وتعرض لخصائص قراءة أبي جعفر في الأصول والمفردات. ثم أخذ يتكلم على الإمام نافع الذي اعتاد المصنفون في علم القراءات أن يبدأوا بالكلام عليه.
