في روايته البوليسية \"دراما في الصيد\" لا يكتفي تشيخوف بتصوير الجريمة، بل يحاول القبض على الجذور الفلسفية والاجتماعية للجريمة، مؤكدا أن المجرم لا ينفك عن المجتمع الذي خلقه.تحتفي الرواية بسمات تشيخوف الحقيقي : نظرته الرصينة للإنسان، وسيكولوجيته القاسية، وتقديس العقل الذي يرفض الابتذال. فالإنسان الإيجابي هو الإنسان الفاعل، الذي يمثله كل من يكدح لإنتاج الحياة، لذلك يتمتع هذا الإنسان، مهما كان بسيطا، بحق ازدراء \"الأسياد\" الذين يفرطون في جهود الآخرين. يضفي تشيخوف على بطلاته، طبعا حيويا ومعقدا، فلا تتحكم إرادة الكاتب بتصرفاتهن، وإنما تنبع من رغباتهن وتطلعاتهن الداخلية، فلا يسوقهن القدر الأعمى إلى المأساة، بل أولئك البشر المعطوبون روحيا.
