في عام 1980، وفي نهاية الفترة السياسية الأكثر كثافة لعمله وحياته، قرر لويس ألتوسير كتابة كتاب منهجي في الفلسفة سيكون في النهاية بمسوى تناول الجميع من دون سابق إعداد. فكان كتابه (تأهيل إلى الفلسفة للذين ليسوا بفلاسفة) هو النتيجة. لكنه أبعد ما يكون عن كتاب تبسيطي أو تمهيدي، يوجز فيه ألتوسير أطروحات فكره الخاص الأساسية. ومن بين مئات الاعتبارات الأخرى، لم يمضي في التمييز بين الفلسفة والممارسات الأخرى في أي كتابة أخرى أبعد مما ذهب إليه في كتابه هذا ؛ كما أنه لم يذهب في تفصيل مفهوم \"الممارسة\" في أي مكان آخر أبعد مما فعل هنا مع التأكيد أن هذا المفهوم بين العديد من المساهمات الحاسمة من اللحظة الفلسفية للستينيات، كان ربما أكثر المفاهيم التي تمتعت بأكبر نجاح، وكان مصدر أكبر عدد من حالات سوء الفهم.
