الكتاب يشتمل على جزئين، الجزء الأول يتناول فى أربعة أبواب المذاهب الفلسفية ونزعتها وتأثيرها وتأثرها بالديانة والأخلاق والتفسير النفساني والاجتماعي فى تفسيرات المعتقدات الدينية، أما الجزء الثاني يتناول النزعة الروحية والعلاقة بين الدين وحدود العلم والدفاع عن الدين والصعوبات القائمة بينهما ومحاولة البحث عن الموضع الذي يسمح لهما بالالتقاء. وهذا المنهج أقرب إلى المتيافزيقا وهو منهج نقدي بحت لأنه يقوم على النظر فى العلم والدين معا.
