تبدأ الرواية بسرد حالة إبراهيم وكيف يعود كل ليلة لبيته وهو في حالة سكر شديدة، حتى تلك الليلة التي تقريبا لا يحدث فيها أي شيء مميز وإنما كعادة العم محمد يوجه له كلمات ويتركه، فيرى إبراهيم الكعبة في منامه ليستيقظ ويتأمل في نفسه وحالته ويشعر بدرجة السوء التي هو عليها، فيخرج ضائعا يسير على غير هدى، إلى أن يسمع آذان الفجر فيتوجه مباشرة للمسجد ويغتسل ويقرر هناك التوجه للحج الذي لم يبقى إلا يوم واحد على إنطلاق رحلته، لم تكن صورة إبراهيم السكير بالشيء الخارق الصعب التصديق بل صاغها الكاتب بطريقة بسيطة جدا وواضحة، كذلك أمر الرؤيا والتوبة لم يبالغ الكاتب قط في أن يصور لنا مشهد التوبة كشيء أسطوري أو أنه معجزة، كان كل ما يحكيه الكاتب منطقي يتقبله اي قارئ.
