كان لمأساة الحلاج التراجيدية التي انتهت بموته على الصليب بعد تقطيع أطرافه، كبير الأثر على مشاعر وأحاسيس المفكرين والأدباء والملهمين على مر العصور. وعلى الرغم من كثرة من تناولوها بالدراسة والتمحيص نرى أن معظمهم لم يعطوا الموضوع كامل حقه، حيث نرى البعض اكتفى بتكفيره بالاعتماد على ما قيل على لسانه من أقوال أو أشعار، بينما سعى البعض إلى تبرئته بالزعم بأن ما قيل على لسانه لا أساس له من الصحة وأنه كلام مدسوس عليه. أما أتباعه من المتصوفين فإنه يقدسون أقواله ويؤكدون نسبتها إليه ولكنهم يقولون أن لها معان باطنة غير المعان الظاهرية، وأن هذه المعاني لا يفهمها سواهم. بينما جنح المستشرقون إلى تفسيرات أخرى وجعلوا منه بطلا ثوريا شبيها بأساطير الغربيين.
