يقصد بالعالم الإسلامي مجموعة الدول التي تزيد فيـها نسبة المسلمين على 50 %، ويغطي العالم الإسلامي مساحة تقدر بـ 35,500,000 كـم2 (خمسة وثلاثين مليون وخمسمائـة ألف كيلومتر مربع) وهي تقارب مساحة قارة آسيا التي تبلغ 300،000، 43 كـم2 فهو يمتد من المحيط الأطلسي غربا إلى المحيط الهادي شرقا، ومن شمال كازاخستان عند دائرة عرض 55 درجة شمالا إلى جزر القمر عند دائرة عرض 13درجة جنوبا.
