تدور أحداث الرواية خلال النصف الثاني من القرن الأول بعد الهجرة، والحكم يومئذ لبني أمية، ودمشق عاصمة الدولة العربية العظمى، وجيوش الفتح توغل في الشرق والغرب والشمال والجنوب، والرقعة العربية تنبسط كل يوم أميالا وفراسخ، والإمبراطوريات العريقة تتهاوى إمبراطورية بعد إمبراطورية، والأباطرة المتأهلون يخرون للأذقان سجدا، إذ لا يستطيعون عن أنفسهم، ولا عمن حولهم دفاعا ولا مقاومة، وكانت الخطة العربية يومئذ أن يصير هذا البحر المتوسط بيننا وبين أوروبا أن يصير بحر العرب ليس على شواطئه الفوقانية ولا التحتانية إلا بلاد عربية يرتفع فيها الآذان وتقام الصلوات.
