يؤكد الأديب سلمان البدعيش صاحب (العطابة) أن روايته سيرة ذاتية لثلاثة أجيال من أسرة وطنية مكافحة، ولم يكن يخطر ببالي عندما بدأت بقراءة هذه الرواية أن أجد طفولتي فيها، تلك الطفولة بما حملته من متاعب أو كانت فيه شاهدا على صدقية السرد وتطابق الشخصية المحورية مع الواقع، وما أضافته الرواية من معلومات موثقة عن شخصية صامتة هادئة كانت مثالا للرقي والمدنية والعطاء، فالشخصية الثالثة من هذه الرواية هو أستاذي ومدير مدرستي الإعدادية التي دخلتها في صيف العام الدراسي 1962 لامتحان انتهاء المرحلة الابتدائية، حيث قيل لنا: إن الامتحان سيكون هناك في الإعدادية الثانية، وكانت الأولى تسمى باسم الشهيد عدنان المدني.
