كانت المعلومات التاريخية التي ذكرها المؤرخ اليوناني \"إكسنيفون\" في كتابه عن تقهقر العشرة آلاف يوناني سنة 401 قبل الميلاد من بلاد العجم إلى الشمال، متضافرة على أن الكرد من أحفاد الكاردوكيين الذين اعترضوا سبيلهم وقاوموهم أشد مقاومة، واستمر هذا القول سائدا إلى ما قبل نصف قرن، غير أن تقدم المباحث التاريخية والحفريات في السنين الأخيرة قد أظهر أقوالا أخرى في منشأ الأكراد وأثبت أنهم أقدم من اليونانيين بزمن طويل.
