صدر هذا الكتاب في طبعته الأولى عام 1864م في لندن وهو رواية لبعثة استكشاف أثرية في مدينة كيريني شرق ليبيا، قام بها الضابطان الإنجليزيان (روبيرت مردوخ سميث) و(إدوين أوغوستوس بورشير)، منطلقين في رحلة بحرية من مالطا إلى طرابلس ثم توجها إلى بنغازي، تم توثيقها في هذا الكتاب. الكتاب في مجمله يحوي معلومات تاريخية وأثرية دون إغفال الجوانب الاجتماعية والاقتصادية لسكان ليبيا وقتها وعلاقتهم بالدولة العثمانية.
