تمثل تجربة علي جعفر العلاق الأولى محاولة في الوعي بالتجاوز، تجاوز وعي ثلاثة أجيال، جيل الرواد، وجيل سبقه : الجيل الخمسيني، والجيل الذي ينتمي إليه. لقد راهنت هذه الأجيال على التحديث في الشكل والرؤيا، فمع الرواد كان الرهان على الشكل، على الرغم من محاولة تجاوز الرؤيا الراهنة فكانت لا تعدو أن تكون تجريبية مجتزأة، أما في العقد الخمسيني فقد كان الرهان على الشكل والرؤيا معا، وكان التحديث في العقد الستيني أوسع مدى : إما عبر المغامرة بتدشين أشكال جديدة مختلفة، ورؤى مغايرة، كما حدث عند ما عرف بجماعة كركوك : فاضل العزاوي، وسركون بولص، وإما عبر توطيد الصلة بالتراث مع التطلع لما يستجد بالجوار.
