يعد نيكولاي غوغول واحدا من آباء الأدب الروسي، ولد في أوكرانيا عام 1971، وبدأ بكتابة الشعر، لكنه فشل فشلا ذريعا، فتوقف نهائيا عن كتابة الشعر، وتحول إلى كتابة القصة. نشر مجموعته القصصية الأولى التي لقيت نجاحا فوريا، ثم غادر روسيا إلى ألمانيا أملا في الهجرة إلى أمريكا، لكنه اضطر للعودة بسبب إفلاسه، عمل أستاذا في مدرسة داخلية للبنات، ثم في جامعة سان بطرسبرغ رغم أنه لا يحمل أي مؤهل جامعي. كتب قصصة غالبا عن حياة الفلاحين في الريف الأوكراني، بأسلوب مرح ممزوج بحكايات العفاريت والسحرة التي استقاها من الفولكلور الأوكراني، ولفت أنظار القراء والنقاد، قال دوستويفسكي عنه: \"إن كل الروايات الواقعية الروسية خرجت من (معطف) غوغول\".
