كل كلمة في هذا الكتاب مهمة للغاية، لأن ادوارد سعيد في هذه النصوص ينجز أفكاره بشكلها الكلي، مؤكدة بصرخة ألم على فضح كل مواقف الصمت والتخاذل، والتزامه بالشك وتقويض التقليد في الأدب الغربي، لأن الثقافة بالنسبة لادوارد سعيد ليست متراصة وليست متجانسة، ليست كلية ولا فردية وإنما نتاج المهيمن. انتهى ادوارد سعيد إلى عداء تام لما يسمى بالنظرية، من أورباخ إلى فوكو، داعية إلى التخلص من الآراء والميول السياسية المتطرفة، وبذلك هاجم الثقافة الغربية من موقع عال. قدم سعيد ثقافة معرفية على نقيض المعرفة القسرية، لأنه يعتقد بأن الثقافة والسياسة هما نفس الشيء، الثقافة تعني طريقة مميزة في العيش، الثقافة وضع طويل والسياسة نوع من توافق أحداث وظروف.
