تميز عبد الله خليفة بالجمع في شخصيته بين المفكر التقدمي والأديب والروائي والمناضل الذي لم يتراجع في كل الظروف عن أفكاره وعن مواقفه. وقاده التزامه بأفكاره التي دافع عنها بشجاعة إلى السجن أكثر من مرة. لكن من أهم ما عرف عنه وهو في السجن، الذي أدخل إليه في عام 1975. من موقعه في قيادة جبهة تحرير البحرين، أنه لم يترك القلم لحظة واحدة. وصار معروفا أنه ألف عددا من كتبه ومن رواياته على وجه الخصوص داخل السجن على ورق السيجارة. وكانت تهرب إليه الأقلام وأوراق السجائر ليمارس عمله الأدبي والفكري. وكانت تهرب أعماله الأدبية من السجن وتطبع ويتم نشرها. وهو بتلك الصفة التي ندر شركاؤه فيها تحول إلى أيقونة بالمعنى الحقيقي المناضل اليساري الحقيقي ولصاحب الفكر النير.
