يكمن الهاجس المعرفي وراء إشكالية هذا الكتاب في محاولة الإجابة عن سؤال : هل فعلا ثمة بنية عميقة، بلغة تشومسكي، تساهم في تكوين صورة \"الآخر\" في الفكر الغربي، وهل يمكن كشف ملامحها وآليات اشتغالها الواعية واللاواعية في إنتاج وإعادة إنتاج خطابه عن \"الآخر\" المسلم، وبالتالي كيف تمارس الأيديولوجيا مكرها في الأنثروبولوجيا والسوسيولجيا بعدما سقط الاستشراق، قديمه وجديده، في صناعة المغايرة وأدلجتها ؟. هذا الكتاب هو محاولة لدراسة تطور التمثلات الغربية ل \"الآخر\" المسلم والقيام بحفريات معرفية للوقوف على أصول تلك التمثلات ومساراتها وتحولاتها. ينطلق الكتاب من فرضية أن تلك التمثلات التي بنتها الثقافة الغربية تجاه \"الآخر\" في تحولاتها وتطوراتها لا تزال مستمرة بصور مختلفة. لذا هو محاولة للقيام بحفريات معرفية، كاشفة ما ترسب أو تكلس من معارف وصور وتمثلات تجاه الذات والآخر بكل ما فيها من توريات وتعميات وانحيازات. إنه بحث في جينالوجيا المغايرة، والتمثلات المتغيرة والمتحولة، المؤطرة لصورة الآخر والمؤسطرة للذات في الثقافة الغربية.
