دراسة تقتفي أثر تاريخ \"فن المناظرة\" والجدل في الثقافة العربية القديمة زمن العصر العباسي الأول، أي على مدى قرن من الزمان، يسبقه استقصاء لتاريخ المناظرة من الجاهلية إلى زمن بني أمية، تختص الدراسة بالوقائع والأحداث التي تصدرت ساحة الثقافة العربية القديمة، ودارت المناظرات بشأنها، لتصير نصوص هذه المناظرات شاهدا وثائقيا على تطور تاريخ الثقافة العربية الإسلامية، ومرصدا بصيرا لطبيعة عقليتها وهى تنتقل من اعتناق الخرافة زمن الجاهلية، إلى عصر البحث والشك قبيل البعثة، إلى عصر العقيدة والإيمان حقبة مجىء الإسلام، انتهاء بعصر العقل منذ بدء القرن الثانى للهجرة، لينتهى المطاف بها إلى الهرم والشيخوخة منذ تولى المتوكل مقاليد الأمور عام 232 هـ.
