يتناول الكتاب رحلة في عام 1846 قام أوجين فرومنتان، برفقة عدد من أصدقائه برحلة إلى الصحراء الجزائرية، فأبدع في وصفها. وقد استوحى معظم أعماله من هذه الأرض التي زارها وتأثر بها، فأصبحت كالأم التي لا تتوقف عن الإنجاب. ولذلك كرر زياراته إلى الجزائر، مرافقاً بعثات التنقيب. كما زار مصر، ورسم في هذه الرحلات عدداً كبيرا من اللوحات.
