هذا الكتاب الذي يعد من إنجازات ما اصطلح عليه بالسوسيولوجيا الكولونيالية والذي أنجزته البعثة العلمية الفرنسية التابعة للدولة الفرنسية يسلط الضوء على فترات مهمة من تاريخ طنجة بدءا من العصور القديمة مرورا بفترة الفنيقيين والوندال والرومان والفتح الإسلامي ثم الاحتلال البرتغالي والإنجليزي إضافة إلى فترة الدولة العلوية والتي على يد أحد ملوكها (المولى إسماعيل) تم تحرير طتجة من الإنجليز. كما أن الكتاب يسلط الضوء على حصيلة البحوث الأركيولوجية التي أجريت في المنطقة وإضافة إلى المعلومات التاريخية والاجتماعية والبشرية فإن الكتاب يشتمل على العديد من الملاحق والجداول تقدم معطيات شتى في جميع المجالات.
