في يوم صيفي قائظ تمدد على صخرة كبيرة تكسوها الطحالب ثعبانا أعور عجوزا اشتهر بين سائر الثعابين بكنية «الأحول»، مع أنه كان أعور وليس أحول، وثعبان آخر في مقتبل العمر وليس لديه كنية. ورغم صغر سنه كان يجيد ابتلاع الأرانب فعلق عليه الآخرون آمالا كبيرة. وعلى أية حال كان قبل قليل يقتات بالفئران وأفراخ الدجاج الرومي البري، لكنه تحول مؤخرا إلى الأرانب فكان ذلك نجاحا مرموقا إذا أخذنا بعين الاعتبار صغر سنه. الغابات الاستوائية الكثيفة تنبسط حول الثعبانين، وقد تمددا في أشعة الشمس يهضمان - باطمئنان - أرنبين ابتلعاهما قبل حين، وهما يتمتعان الآن بقسط من الراحة وسط أشجار اليوبيا وجوز الهند والموز واللوز، حيث ترفرف فراشات بحجم الأطيار الصغيرة وأطيار بحجم الفراشات الكبيرة، وتحلق الببغاوات من شجرة إلى أخرى فيومض ريشها الزاهي كاللميع واللهيب وهي تواصل الثرثرة والتغريد حتى أثناء الطيران.
